Photography in Ads

A great advertising photograph is not just a well-executed image - it's an image that communicates an idea with the completeness and precision that no other medium could match. The Benetton campaigns photographed by Oliviero Toscani made social arguments through single images that could not have been made any other way. The Marlboro Man, the Wonderbra billboard, the Dove Real Beauty portraits - these images did their work through the specific quality of what the camera caught. Photography in advertising is not decoration; it's communication.

Made for the Moncler GENIUS collection, the film takes the collection name literally and asks what Millie Bobby Brown would be if she were not Millie Bobby Brown. Why this collection is worth studying

Studying great advertising photography is an education in seeing. The best images in this collection work because of specific decisions: the angle, the moment, the quality of light, the relationship between foreground and background, the expression on a face at a precise fraction of a second. Understanding those decisions - and the creative thinking that led to them - develops the visual intelligence that every creative needs, regardless of what medium they work in.
