Comparison Ads

Comparison advertising - directly naming and challenging a competitor - is one of the riskiest and potentially most effective strategies in advertising. Done badly, it makes the challenging brand look small and the challenged brand look significant. Done well - as in the Pepsi Challenge, Apple's 'Get a Mac' campaign, or Burger King's sustained campaign against McDonald's - it creates a framing that defines the entire category around the challenger's chosen battleground. These campaigns didn't just compare products; they defined what the comparison should be about.

  4. Evil Twin - Renault · Publicis, Buenos Aires, Argentina · 2015

Renault "Evil Twin" for original parts: two identical-looking components, "they look the same until one makes trouble." The insight: counterfeit parts win on price because they look indistinguishable; the campaign makes the similarity itself the threat.

World Vision's Here / Over there confronts the gap between a comfortable childhood and a stolen one, with 356 million children denied the childhood they deserve. 11. Usain Bolt | #BeTheFastest - Virgin Media · BBH London · 2017

Usain Bolt's world record is 9.58 seconds - so the film is built as ten separate 9.58-second pieces, each showing a different facet of what that duration contains, cut together into one story. The insight is that broadband speed is an abstraction nobody can feel, and the only universally understood

The ins

  15. THE REAL TERROR - Tolbrín · Leo Burnett Colombia · 2023

Why this collection is worth studying

The comparison campaigns in this collection share a quality of strategic intelligence: they identified the specific ground on which their brand could win and made that ground the centre of the advertising argument. The creative execution was built on a strategic insight, not the other way around. Understanding that relationship - between strategy and creative, between what you want to say and what will actually be heard - is one of the most useful things this archive can teach.
