The Creatives Room

British Advertising

British advertising has a global reputation for creative excellence built on decades of genuinely great work. The qualities most associated with it - wit, understatement, craft, an unsentimental approach to emotion - reflect something true about a particular advertising culture. From the Economist's poster series and Gold Blend's soap opera campaign to John Lewis's Christmas films and the Guinness 'Surfer', British advertising has consistently produced work that is both commercially effective and genuinely creative. This collection brings together the best of it.

The campaigns in this collection

  1. London Design Guide - Alistair Hall · 2009

Cover for the London Design Guide. Treating the book as a literal map grid frames it as a navigational tool for the city's design scene - a guide you plot a route through.

  2. The Angry Island - Marion Deuchars · 2010

Cover for A.A. Gill's The Angry Island: Hunting the English. Swamping the page with real killjoy signage paints a nation defined by its grumbling rules and irritations - the Englishness Gill skewers.

  3. This Is Us - Nike · Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam · 2017

To challenge conservative gender norms in Turkey that relegate women to domestic roles and discourage female athleticism, Nike aimed to empower Turkish women to redefine their societal identity. Built on the insight that women are constantly told who they should be by traditional culture, the creati

  4. The Smallest Sponsors - facebook · uncommon creative studio · 2022

Facebook's 'The Smallest Sponsors': the small businesses whose names are on youth-team jerseys - backing kids who'll never go pro. The insight: while big brands buy big games, the platform salutes the businesses that sponsored everyone first, which is also exactly its own customer base.

  5. Steps - ikea · mother london · 2019

To launch its sustainable Greenwich store, IKEA asked customers to arrive the greenest way possible, on foot. The insight: a long walk feels daunting as a distance but manageable as a countdown, so 80 posters across South East London each displayed the exact number of steps remaining to the store, t

  6. The Illegal Blood Bank - UNILAD · LADbible Group · 2019

UK law barred gay and bisexual men from donating blood unless celibate for three months - so UNILAD opened a blood bank for exactly those men, collected real, safe, tested blood, and displayed it in bus-stop poster frames outside Parliament on the day the new session opened. The insight is that the

  7. 3 Bar Superstar - Adidas · 2023

For 50 years of the adidas Superstar, and in homage to the shoe's three bars, the brand cut three bars out of a new Kano track and left the gap open - then turned phones into studio microphones so anyone could record their own three bars into the hole in the song, with pop-up booths in London, Manch

  8. Tiny Dancer - John Lewis Insurance · adam&eveDDB · 2015

A small girl dances around the house to Elton John's 'Tiny Dancer', joyfully wrecking everything she touches - lamps, vases, a television - and the film ends on home insurance. The insight is that insurance is universally sold on fear and catastrophe, but the things that actually damage a home are u

  9. Go on, lad - Hovis · mccann london · 2013

A boy runs home with a loaf of bread and passes through 122 years of British history on the way - suffragettes, the Blitz, the miners' strike, the street party - and arrives at his own front door, in the present, in a single unbroken journey. The insight is that a bread brand's real asset is longevi

  10. Three Little Pigs - The Guardian · BBH London · 2012

The Three Little Pigs is reported as a live, unfolding news story: the pigs are arrested for boiling the wolf, the wolf's asthma casts doubt on whether he could have blown the houses down, social media erupts, and it escalates into a debate about insurance fraud, austerity and mortgage arrears. The

  11. Homeless is what they are, not who they are - west london mission · AMV BBDO · 2019

Outdoor posters that describe a person the way a friend would - the cheeky youngest kid, Ealing born and bred, a tea-over-coffee sort of girl, two and a half sugars and never three - and only in the last line mention that she is sleeping rough. The insight is that homelessness is the only condition

  12. Pepsi Football Nation | The Home of Football Banter & Rivalry - Pepsi · Big Time Creative · 2026

David Beckham introduces a fictional country where the fans, not the officials, write the laws of the game, and the film runs through the arguments that would become statute there - football or soccer, who the real king of skill is - with Salah, Vini Jr, Putellas, Wirtz and Lauren James caught in th

  13. Whopper of a Finish - Burger King · BBH · 2026

Burger King UK photographed real marathon finishers - medals on, foil blankets still round their shoulders - eating a Whopper, and ran the portraits as posters headed 'Finished', each with a time stamp showing how long the burger took to eat, set like an official race result. The insight is that the

  14. London Olympic Games - Coca-Cola · mccann london · 2012

Coke's London 2012 platform turned the Games into music instead of sponsorship wallpaper. Mark Ronson travelled five countries recording actual athlete sounds - microphones strapped to a hurdler's legs, an archer's release, a table-tennis rally - and built the anthem "Anywhere in the World" with Kat

  15. Premier League with Ted Lasso - NBC Sports · bbdo new york · 2013

To promote its newly acquired Premier League broadcast rights to a skeptical US audience, NBC Sports needed to overcome the cultural barrier of American sports fans who found soccer's rules and customs confusing. The campaign taps into this cultural gap by personifying the average American's bewilde

  17. Owned by You, Right by You - Co-op · VCCP London · 2024

A 60-second film animated in stop motion out of printed till receipts, asking what you would build if you were inventing a business from scratch today - and answering that you would have it owned by the people who shop in it. Even the ITV ident around the break turned black and white to read as a re

Why this collection is worth studying

Understanding what makes British advertising distinctive is partly understanding British culture - its relationship with irony, its discomfort with overt emotion, its preference for showing over telling. But it's also understanding a specific creative community: the cluster of agencies, directors, writers, and art directors that built a reputation over fifty years and trained generations who carried those standards forward. The work in this collection is the product of that culture.
