Humanitarian Campaigns

Humanitarian advertising faces the most difficult creative brief in the industry: making the suffering of people far away feel real and urgent to audiences who are simultaneously overwhelmed with information and emotionally defended against it. The campaigns in this collection found ways through those defences - not by providing more statistics, but by finding the specific human story that made an abstract crisis feel personal. UNHCR's refugee awareness campaigns, Médecins Sans Frontières' work, and Amnesty International's human rights advertising have all demonstrated that advertising can contribute to how the world understands its own crises.

The campaigns in this collection

  1. We're not loving' it - Freelancer

This subvertising piece twists McDonald's globally recognized slogan "I'm lovin' it" into a stark critique of corporate complicity, geopolitical stances, and military destruction. By contrasting iconic corporate branding with an apocalyptic scene of urban bombardment, the creative highlights the cla

Cover for Chris Vick's Shadow Creatures. The children fleeing through snowy woods under a warplane evokes the novel's wartime survival story - young people on the run in occupied Scandinavia.

  3. Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid - Penguin Books Ltd · David Pearson · 2009

Cover for Virginia Woolf's Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid. Bombers silhouetted against the moon capture the essay's setting - Woolf thinking about peace and masculinity while planes drone overhead.

  4. Peace - Vintage · Helen Yentus · 2009

  6. Iran Massacre 2026 - Sajad Amini · 2026

A memorial protest poster about state killings in Iran. Testimony reduced to shattered fragments of a parent's words makes the violence feel raw and unassimilable - type broken like the lives it names.

  7. Under Pressure - Oxfam

The climate crisis lands hardest on people who did least to cause it, while the wealthiest pollute profitably, and governments including Canada's are being asked to make polluters pay. A signature feels far too small to matter against that, so Oxfam illustrates the force one actually carries.

  8. Violence against women leaves traces - Aurora Saúde · ORO Comunicação

Every March, health insurers run Women's Month work about strength, self-care and wellbeing. The one subject absent is violence against women, even though its consequences arrive in clinics daily as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, insomnia, chronic pain and medication dependence. Aurora Saude pu

  9. Wars - Amnistia Internacional · Wild Fi Santiago, Chile · 2026

The campaign leans on the double meaning of the word. On one side are the armed conflicts where children and adolescents are forcibly recruited; on the other are the wars of an actual childhood, pillow fights, tickle fights, water battles. Setting them in the same frame is what makes the real one le

  10. If I Could Fly - Voices of Children

A fundraising film for Voices of Children made by students at Filmakademie Baden-Wurttemberg, built to make the invisible damage of war legible. 11. Domestic - A21 · 2018

An awareness film for the anti-trafficking organisation A21 - a woman amid domestic textiles evokes hidden domestic servitude, urging viewers to see and act against modern slavery.

  12. The Hidden Room - Home Box · FP7 McCann · 2022

Home Box asked 329 domestic helpers to name their favourite place in the homes they work and live in. The insight: every room they described belonged to someone else, and the one that stayed hidden was their own, typically about 7 by 10 feet. Following four of them, the film turns that omission into

  13. The Future Starts Small - SFND

SFND "The Future Starts Small". A spot framing big futures beginning with small first steps.

  15. Laws under attack - ICRC · TBWA\RAAD · 2024

After a targeted attack destroyed the last hospital in south Lebanon, the ICRC inscribes articles of the Geneva Convention onto the ruined building's own shattered walls, calligraphy by Lebanese muralist Ghaleb Hawila. The insight: the most damning place to display a violated law is on the wreckage

  16. Uncensored Press - Al Joumhouria · TBWA\RAAD · 2024

As social algorithms suppress war coverage from the Middle East, Al Joumhouria newspaper bypasses the filters by transforming war images into typewritten art. The insight: if images are throttled, words find another way, so convert suppressed stories into a form the algorithm can't recognise as the

  17. Inkvisible - UN Women · Impact BBDO · 2024

Henna means happy marriage - so to expose the fact that one in three married women in Pakistan is abused, the bruises were drawn in henna: a black eye, fingers around a throat, in the medium of celebration. Worn by parliamentarians in government sessions, it helped drive a new bill increasing protec

  18. The Mom Penalty - women empowered global · HumanSense, Sri Lanka · 2021

Women Empowered Global's 'The Mom Penalty' for #ChooseToChallenge: pandemic working mothers juggled jobs, housework, childcare and remote school - and four times more women than men left the workforce. The insight: the penalty is structural, not personal; the campaign names it like a fine so employe

  19. The Mirror - UNAIDS · FCB India · 2021

UNAIDS' 'The Mirror' for Transgender Day of Visibility: gender-diversity taboos broken down where they start - childhood - because transgender teenagers attempt suicide at far higher rates. The insight: the mirror is where a child first meets themselves; the campaign asks the world to let that refle

  20. Beauty Tips by Reshma: How to get perfect red lips - make love not scars · ogilvy & mather · 2016

  22. Help Is Part Of It - frontline workers counseling project · TBWA\Chiat\Day · 2020

The Frontline Workers Counseling Project: free mental-health counselling for every Bay Area frontline worker, whatever their position. The insight: the pandemic's helpers were structurally last in line for help; the campaign's whole job is the permission slip - you're not alone, and it costs nothing

  23. Generation Lockdown - March For Our Lives · McCann New York · 2020

March For Our Lives' 'Generation Lockdown': in 95% of US public schools, children learn to barricade doors and balance on toilet seats so shooters can't see their feet - drills as routine as math. The insight: the generation itself is the evidence; showing what students already know how to do indict

  24. The Land of the Unfree - Amnesty International · Anorak NoA · 2023

Amnesty International x Anorak/NoA, 'Land of the Unfree': America's most cherished phrase edited to indict the state of abortion rights. The insight: the country's self-image is the campaign's medium - one deleted syllable turns anthem into audit.

Why this collection is worth studying

Humanitarian advertising is worth studying for what it reveals about empathy as a creative strategy. The campaigns that moved people and changed behaviour were the ones that found a single face, a single story, a single moment that stood for a larger reality. The abstraction of 'millions of refugees' is emotionally unmanageable; the specificity of one person's story is not. That lesson applies far beyond the humanitarian context.
