Data-Driven Ads

Data-driven advertising becomes great advertising when the data is treated as creative raw material rather than a targeting mechanism. Spotify's Wrapped campaign turned listening data into a personalised story that people eagerly shared. British Airways 'The Magic of Flying' used live flight data to trigger billboards at the precise moment a plane flew overhead. The Economist used programmatic targeting to serve one-line editorial messages to specific audience segments. In each case, the data enabled a degree of relevance or personalisation that made the advertising feel like something other than advertising.

Why this collection is worth studying

The risk with data-driven advertising is that the novelty of the technique substitutes for the quality of the idea. The campaigns in this collection avoided that trap by asking: what does the data allow us to say that we couldn't say without it? When the answer to that question is genuinely interesting, you have the beginning of something. When the data is just a mechanism for more precisely delivering a conventional message, you have a targeting exercise, not a campaign.
