Valentine's Day Ads

Valentine's Day advertising operates in one of the most crowded and most emotionally predictable windows in the calendar. What makes the campaigns in this collection stand out is that they found angles on love, romance, and the occasion itself that weren't obvious. Some found humour in the commercial machinery of the day. Others found genuine emotion in unexpected places. A few subverted the romance convention entirely. All of them earned attention in a moment when every other brand was competing for the same feeling.

The campaigns in this collection

  1. Above Us the Sea - Dead Ink Books · Emma Ewbank · 2025

  2. Lobster - Fleet · Jack Smyth · 2025

Cover for Hollie McNish's poetry collection Lobster. The oversized, friendly claws give the odd title a bright, approachable face - matching poems about learning to love the awkward and unlovely.

  3. Tarzan's Tonsillitis - Pantheon · Frank Gargiulo · 2009

Cover for Alfredo Bryce Echenique's Tarzan's Tonsillitis. The tied-up correspondence signals a love story told across years and continents through letters - a romance kept alive on paper.

  4. A Mad Desire to Dance - Helen Yentus · 2010

Cover for Elie Wiesel's novel. A single, lonely nighttime dance carries the book's themes of longing, memory and the near-mad impulse to keep moving through darkness - intimacy staged against an empty, shadowed city.

  5. Three Delays - Harper Perennial · Milan Bozic · 2011

Cover for Charlie Smith's Three Delays. The washed-out shore and loose brush lettering evoke the novel's drifting, addiction-haunted lovers - restless lives lived at the water's edge.

  6. Love proofed - Maxell · La Destilería, Guayaquil.

Love has its ups and downs, and some of those downs take your files with them. For Valentine's Day, Maxell positioned durable storage as a product built to survive whatever a relationship does to it, celebrating tolerance rather than romance.

  7. Valentine’s Interruption - Domino's · The Newtons Laboratory

Everyone knows what Valentine's Day is really about, and everyone knows hunger follows. Couples order ahead to solve it, forgetting that a delivery arriving at the wrong moment is its own kind of interruption. Domino's builds the joke on the timing rather than the food.

  8. Baci Perugina - Baci Perugina · YAM112003 · 2016

A film for Baci Perugina: hands unwrapping the blue-foiled chocolate foreground the "baci" (kisses) and the love note inside - romance and affection shared in a single sweet.

  13. Smart x Apple Music with Ben&Ben - Apple · TBWA\Media Arts Lab · 2022

A telecom spot for Smart's GigaLife x Apple Music tie-up with band Ben&Ben: the app on screen sells the perk - free music streaming bundled into the mobile plan.

  14. Father’s Day - CentrePoint · 2021

A Father's Day film for CentrePoint: a hand tucking a "Happy Father's Day" card onto a wrapped gift centres the thoughtful gesture - the retailer as the place to find the right present for dad.

  15. See how far your love can go - Pomelo · BBDO Guerrero · 2023

Pomelo, the money-transfer app for Filipinos in the US, tells 'Lola and Jacob' - a grandmother and grandson bridged by remittances that build credit and futures, not just cover bills. The insight: remittance advertising stops at the sacrifice; Pomelo reframes sending money home as shared wealth-buil

  16. How We Sleep - Johnson & Johnson · bbdo new york · 2016

Johnson & Johnson on the sleep struggle: every parent invents their own bespoke ritual to get the baby down. The insight: parenthood's hardest nightly job is also its most universal comedy - the brand wins by admitting the product's real context is exhaustion and love in equal parts.

  17. Mum, I'm sorry - M&C Saatchi · m&c saatchi · 2020

This UK public-health message reframes staying away from your mother on Mother's Day as an act of love. 18. Your father deserves something better - Vinhedos · Executiva Propaganda · 2017

Vinhedos' Father's Day series: irreverent illustrated copy in the classic Brazilian style, roasting the default gifts - "if underwear were a good gift, your father would wear it over his pants" - each gag landing on "give the present he deserves. Give Vinhedos." The insight: Father's Day advertising

  19. Adopting Older Children - charity foundation tabletochki · Ogilvy Ukraine

An adoption campaign confronts the specific hesitation around older children, who are passed over as prospective parents worry they're too set in their ways to bond. The insight: that reluctance is built on misconception, not fact, older kids in orphanages want a family as deeply as any child, so th

  20. Love is Free - IKEA · The Newtons Laboratory · 2016

Why this collection is worth studying

The best Valentine's Day advertising doesn't just be about love - it has a perspective on love. A specific take, an observation, a tension that makes the work feel like it was written by someone who'd actually thought about the experience rather than reached for the first available romantic cliche. Finding that perspective is the creative challenge, and the campaigns in this collection all found one.
