Dove's Greatest Campaigns

In 2004, Dove launched the Real Beauty campaign and changed what was considered acceptable for a beauty brand to say. Instead of selling aspiration, Dove sold recognition - showing women as they actually are, and questioning the industry's definition of beautiful. 'Evolution', the time-lapse film showing a model's transformation through retouching, became one of the most viral ads before viral was a category. Two decades later, the brand's commitment to the platform has made it one of the most trusted in the world.

The campaigns in this collection

  1. Mothermonials #TheBeautyTestStopsWithMe - dove · ogilvy · 2021

Dove's 'Mothermonials' #TheBeautyTestStopsWithMe: Indian matrimonial biodatas read like product labels - fair, slim, good-looking, listed before any personality - so Dove asks mothers, the traditional authors of those biodatas, to rewrite the script. The insight: the beauty test is administered at h

  2. Nourishing Secret - dove · Ogilvy Athens · 2018

Dove's Nourishing Secret series: beauty rituals from Japan, Central America and India - geisha, Mayan and Ayurvedic traditions - bottled, so the wisdom travels without the itinerary. The campaign's joke is the alternative: fly to Paris, then Mexico City, then take a bus... or open the jar. The insig

  3. Legacy - Dove · Ogilvy · 2016

Dove filmed mothers describing their own bodies, then filmed their daughters describing theirs - and the language matched, almost word for word. The insight is that body anxiety is inherited: girls learn to criticise their appearance by listening to their mothers do it first. The strategic problem w

  4. Courage is Beautiful - Dove · Ogilvy · 2020

At the height of the pandemic Dove ran unretouched portraits of healthcare workers whose faces were bruised, chafed and welted by hours in PPE - the exact opposite of everything beauty advertising shows. The insight is that twenty years of 'Real Beauty' could only stay credible if it held up in a mo

  5. America the Beautiful - Dove · Ogilvy

The campaign subverts the patriotic anthem America the Beautiful to address systemic racism and challenge the nation's promise of equality in the wake of 2020's racial justice protests. It taps into the cultural insight that the idealized myth of American liberty rings hollow for Black Americans fac

  6. Toxic Influence: Mothers & Daughters Confront Toxic Social Media - Dove US · ogilvy · 2022

Dove asked mothers what they made of the beauty advice their daughters see online, then showed them deepfakes of themselves delivering that same advice - telling their own daughters to get fillers, fix their nose, eat less. The insight is that parents dismiss toxic beauty content as background noise

  7. The Code - Dove · Ogilvy · 2024

Dove marked twenty years of Real Beauty by pledging never to use AI-generated women in its advertising, and publishing a prompt that steers generative models toward real, diverse bodies. The insight is that generative AI is trained on the same narrow beauty ideal Dove has spent two decades fighting,

  8. The Game is Ours - Dove · Ogilvy · 2026

Dove's Super Bowl LX spot puts more than 90 young female athletes through a choreographed montage across swimming, track, football and MMA, scored not with music but with the real sounds of bodies in play - breath, impact, footfall - which build until they drown out the negative body talk layered un

  9. These Legs: A Big Game Film #KeepHerConfident - Dove · Ogilvy · 2025

A three-year-old girl sprints joyfully down a pavement, and the line lands: at three, these legs are unstoppable; at fourteen, she'll think they're unbearable. The insight is that half the girls who quit sport are criticised for their body type, so the thing that ends a sporting life is usually a se

  10. Balls on Fire - Dove Men+Care · Ogilvy · 2026

Two men stand at podiums in an empty stadium, each with two footballs in front of him - one repping Dove Men+Care Whole Body Deo, the other 'Other Spray'. Both spray. Dove's balls sit there. The rival's burst into flames, climbing until the man is beating them out with a towel. The insight is that m

  11. The Chant - Dove Men+Care · Ogilvy · 2026

Set to the White Stripes' 'Seven Nation Army' - the riff every stadium already sings without being taught - the film follows fans through cities, streets and stands as a single voice swells into a global chorus, landing on 'care for your skin like you care for the game'. The insight is that fandom i

  12. Celebrating Father’s Day with dads who care - Dove Men+Care · Ogilvy & Mather · 2015

Dove Men+Care sought to challenge traditional, hyper-masculine grooming advertising by reinforcing its core brand philosophy that care is the true measure of strength. The campaign taps into the insight that modern fathers reject outdated, stoic media stereotypes, viewing emotional vulnerability as

Why this collection is worth studying

Dove's Real Beauty archive is essential study for anyone working on briefs where brand values have to do real work. The campaign succeeded because it identified a genuine consumer frustration, took a clear position, and held it - even when that position was uncomfortable for the category. Consistency over time is what turned a soap campaign into a cultural movement.
