The Creatives Room

Black & White Ads

Choosing to shoot in black and white in the colour era is a creative decision with consequences. It signals seriousness, timelessness, or a directness that colour sometimes dilutes. The campaigns in this collection made that choice deliberately - Levi's 501 ads, early Calvin Klein work, certain Guinness executions - and used the absence of colour to focus attention on composition, expression, and the human details that colour sometimes distracts from. Monochrome in advertising isn't a budget compromise; it's a creative statement.

The campaigns in this collection

  1. Beautiful Days - Hamish Hamilton · Chris Bentham · 2025

Cover for Zach Williams's story collection Beautiful Days. The glitched, disintegrating face over a pulp cowgirl image signals unsettling stories where ordinary reality quietly comes apart.

  2. El Tercer Reich - Katya Mezhibovskaya · 2010

Cover for Roberto Bolano's The Third Reich. Elegant yellow script clashing against a grimy war-game image and torn label captures the novel's creeping menace - a holiday and a strategy game shading into dread.

  3. Nocturno de Chile - Katya Mezhibovskaya · 2010

Cover for Roberto Bolano's By Night in Chile. The crushed paper and sickly green suggest a night of feverish, guilty confession - the priest-narrator's reckoning with complicity under Pinochet.

  4. Conversations with Woody Allen - Knopf · Chip Kidd™ · 2010

Cover for Eric Lax's Conversations with Woody Allen. The pensive portrait wreathed in snippets of talk mirrors the book's form - decades of candid interviews about film, laid out like a scattered chat.

  5. Black Seconds - Mariner Books · Christopher Moisan · 2009

Cover for Karin Fossum's Black Seconds. An abandoned bike's shadow, its rider gone, chills instantly - the vanished child at the heart of the Scandinavian crime novel.

  6. Perfume - Vintage · Gabriele Wilson · 2009

Cover for Patrick Suskind's Perfume. The exposed, vulnerable neck hints at the novel's scent-obsessed killer - beauty and murder inseparable, the body as something to be captured.

  7. The Luzhin Defense - Vintage · Paul Sahre · 2010

Cover for Nabokov's The Luzhin Defense. The disintegrating chessboard captures the chess-master hero's unravelling mind - the game he cannot stop playing tearing his reality apart.

  8. Rust and Bone - Catherine Casalino · 2009

Cover for Craig Davidson's story collection Rust and Bone. The bare fists and dogfight photo announce the book's brutal, bodily world of boxers and bare survival - flesh against hard fact.

  9. Outer Dark - David Pearson · 2010

Cover for Cormac McCarthy's Outer Dark. The gold-on-gold embossing makes the words themselves the whole image - fitting for a writer whose prose is the event, glowing out of darkness.

  10. 2010: Whitney Biennial - Project Projects · 2010

Identity for the 2010 Whitney Biennial. The nested, self-repeating poster and the sudden duotone shift frame the survey as an exhibition that reflects on itself - contemporary American art seen through layered, recursive lenses rather than a single tidy image.

  11. Estrella distante - Katya Mezhibovskaya · 2010

Cover for Roberto Bolano's Distant Star. The faint aircraft and skywriting nod to the novel's poet-pilot who writes verse in the sky; the degraded photo and torn label mirror its theme of beauty entwined with atrocity.

  12. Los Detectives Salvajes - Katya Mezhibovskaya · 2010

Cover for Roberto Bolano's The Savage Detectives. The splintered image and torn label mirror the novel's fragmented, many-voiced quest - youth, poetry and disappearance pieced together from shards.

  13. Pass Thru Fire - Stefan Sagmeister · 2010

Stefan Sagmeister's cover for Lou Reed's collected lyrics. Writing the words onto Reed's own face fuses the man and his language - the lyrics literally inseparable from the body that lived them.

  14. Supermarket - St. Martin's Press · Jason Ramirez · 2010

Cover for Satoshi Azuchi's Supermarket. The ordinary eggs shot like a still life dignify the humble grocery world of the novel - a corporate drama set among the shelves.

  15. The Open Road - Vintage · Helen Yentus · 2009

Cover for Pico Iyer's The Open Road. The Dalai Lama quietly alone in an anonymous room captures the book's angle - the private, travelling man behind the global icon.

  16. I Haven't Been Thinking About You At All Lately - Shannon Freshwater · 2009

Cover for Jacob Evans's collection. The coiled snake under a breezy, obviously-untrue title needles at denial and lingering feeling - the casual line contradicted by the tension in the image.

  17. Three Delays - Harper Perennial · Milan Bozic · 2011

Cover for Charlie Smith's Three Delays. The washed-out shore and loose brush lettering evoke the novel's drifting, addiction-haunted lovers - restless lives lived at the water's edge.

  18. The Cruel Radiance - University Of Chicago Press · Isaac Tobin · 2010

Cover for Susie Linfield's The Cruel Radiance. The child's unflinching stare embodies the book's argument - that we must look directly at photographs of suffering rather than turn away.

  19. Winchell - Vintage · Barbara deWilde · 2011

Cover for Neal Gabler's Winchell. The cut-and-paste newspaper lettering evokes the gossip columns Winchell ruled - a biography dressed as the scandal-sheet type he made famous.

  20. I Was a Dancer - Knopf · Jason Booher · 2010

Cover for Jacques d'Amboise's memoir I Was a Dancer. The soaring leap frozen against calm blue embodies a life given to dance - lightness and discipline in a single suspended moment.

  21. Die Nerven - Falk Schwalbe · 2022

Tour poster for the German noise-rock band Die Nerven. The type shredded into vertical drips visualises distortion and frayed nerves - the "100 billion decibel" promise made graphic.

  22. In The Name of Living - Sajad Amini · 2026

Poster for "In the Name of Living," an evening of Iranian music and conversation in solidarity with the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. The broken bilingual type embodies a culture asserting itself under pressure.

  23. 44e AMR Jazz Festival - Atelier BLVDR for 100 beste Plakate · 2025

The improvisational spirit of jazz rendered as spontaneous gesture: hand-made brush marks stand in for a live solo while the typographic grid keeps time. Poster for the 44th AMR Jazz Festival in Geneva.

  24. Bilingual Typography CAA Conference NYC - Sajad Amini · 2025

Identity for a bilingual-typography session at the CAA conference. The letterforms pulling apart and re-mapping dramatise the real tension of designing across Latin and Perso-Arabic scripts - type as a system under negotiation.

Why this collection is worth studying

Black and white advertising rewards close looking. Without colour to guide the eye, composition becomes the primary visual tool, and the best practitioners in this collection used it with precision. Studying these campaigns is an education in what visual hierarchy looks like when you remove one of its most powerful elements.
