The Creatives Room

Tech Advertising

Technology advertising faces a persistent creative problem: the product is usually complex, the benefits abstract, and the audience's frame of reference for comparison is limited. The brands that have solved this most effectively - Apple, Google, Microsoft at its best - have done so by ignoring features entirely and showing what technology enables at a human level. Not 'this chip runs at this speed' but 'this is the moment when you're no longer afraid of the interview'. The feature is the means; the human moment is the message.

The campaigns in this collection

  1. Your ideas, your apps - Base44

Base44 is an AI-powered app builder that lets anyone turn a plain-language description into a working application, backend and all, in minutes. The film frames that promise as 'Your Ideas, Your Apps', presenting polished example apps - a hiking route tracker, a weather dashboard - to argue that buil

  2. Can't is Dead - Base44 · 2026

The campaign centers on a rallying cry for a new generation of creators and innovators, boldly declaring that 'Can't is Dead.' Tapping into a cultural shift away from traditional gatekeeping and limiting mindsets, the strategic insight asserts that modern tools and relentless drive render former tec

  3. Hum - Atlantic · Jonathan Pelham · 2025

Cover for Helen Phillips's Hum. A glowing circuit-like tree framed as a screen, dwarfing the little humans below, evokes the novel's near-future where nature and surveillance technology are eerily entwined.

  4. Escape - Blink Publishing · Steve Leard · 2024

Cover for Marie Le Conte's Escape. The lone Esc key turns the title into the universal "get me out" button - a wry emblem for a generation trying to escape the internet that shaped them.

  5. The Essential Engineer - Knopf · Chip Kidd™ · 2010

Cover for Henry Petroski's The Essential Engineer. Tower and turbines flanking the sun cast engineering as the practical force that turns scientific ideas into real solutions.

  6. You Are Not a Gadget (UK) - Penguin UK · Olly Moss · 2009

UK cover for Jaron Lanier's You Are Not a Gadget. Wrapping the book inside an e-reader screen is a sharp joke - the manifesto against being reduced to a gadget, presented as one.

  7. Design By Numbers - The MIT Press · John Maeda · 2009

Cover for John Maeda's Design By Numbers. The three algorithmic images are outputs of the very idea the book teaches - design generated through code, art made from numbers.

  8. The Shallows - W. W. Norton & Company · Ben Wiseman · 2010

Cover for Nicholas Carr's The Shallows. The subtitle receding into pale grey while the title stands bold enacts the argument - deep attention fading as our thinking grows shallow online.

  9. You Are Not a Gadget - Knopf · Jason Booher · 2009

Cover for Jaron Lanier's You Are Not a Gadget. Type assembled from repeating circuit-like frames enacts the warning - the human squeezed into rigid computer templates the manifesto rails against.

  10. Googled - Ben Wiseman · 2009

Cover for Ken Auletta's Googled. Hijacking Google's own logo palette (with a telling pixel-glitch) turns the brand's cheerfulness slightly ominous, matching the book's account of how the company upended media.

  11. LaserWriter II - Farrar,Straus and Giroux · Tamara Shopsin · 2021

Cover for Tamara Shopsin's LaserWriter II. Building the whole design from printer test-page marks perfectly suits a novel set in a 90s Mac repair shop - the machine printing its own book cover.

  12. 2001: A Space Odyssey - Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer · 1968

Kubrick's meditation on human evolution: a mysterious black monolith nudges apes toward tools, then nudges humanity toward the stars, framing technology as both our greatest leap and our greatest threat. The sentient computer HAL 9000 becomes the film's tragic antagonist, more emotionally legible th

  13. Aftermath - Google

School maths has changed and parents cannot help with homework using the methods they were taught. Google Gemini is positioned as the translator between the two: a tool that takes the maths a parent already knows and converts it into the new method their child is being taught, aimed at the frustrati

  14. Dad’s Manual - Cochez · Star5 Ogilvy · 2026

The insight is that fathers rarely wait for the right moment to give advice; it comes out while they are fixing or assembling something with their children. For Father's Day, Cochez turned flat-pack assembly instructions into Dad's Manuals, where each numbered step of a bicycle, skateboard or dresse

  15. Aerospace - Rolls Royce

Rolls-Royce "Aerospace". A Rolls-Royce spot framing aerospace engineering and power.

  16. Airtag - Apple

Apple launched AirTag by dramatising the search rather than the tracker. The insight: losing keys down the back of the sofa is a universally understood non-emergency, so the film sends a man on a full expedition into the world between the couch cushions, treating a few square feet of upholstery as u

  17. Nova 8 Pro Fast Charge - Huawei

Huawei "Nova 8 Pro Fast Charge". A phone spot showcasing the Nova 8 Pro's rapid charging.

Globant "Seek Reinvention". Globant frames digital transformation as a constant drive to reinvent.

  21. Surface Original by Design - Microsoft

Original by Design plays on the double meaning of original: Surface is the hardware that was designed from scratch, and it is the tool for people whose job is making original things. Inspiration sparks the idea, Surface makes it real. The work shows creators, designers, architects and engineers usin

  22. Never Settle - OnePlus · Carrot · 2017

OnePlus "Never Settle". OnePlus frames its phones around a refusal to settle for less.

  23. Ready for the New One - Sono Motors · 2020

Sono Motors "Ready for the New One". A solar-electric-vehicle spot teasing a new model.

  24. Unleashed: Pro Apps - Apple · 2021

Apple's "Unleashed" pro-apps film: impossible digital creatures blooming into the real world dramatise the creative power the hardware and pro software let users unleash.

Why this collection is worth studying

As technology becomes more embedded in everyday life, the challenge for tech advertising is maintaining relevance without overstating significance. The campaigns that have navigated this best are the ones that start from a moment of genuine human insight - a real problem, a real aspiration, a real emotion - and work backwards to the product. That order of operations is counter-intuitive for engineering cultures and essential for advertising effectiveness.
