Storytelling Ads

Storytelling in advertising is more than finding an emotional moment - it's constructing a narrative arc with characters who feel real, conflicts worth caring about, and resolutions that earn their emotional weight. The best story-based campaigns - Thai Life Insurance's 'Unsung Hero', Google's 'Parisian Love', the John Lewis Christmas films - work as short films that happen to involve a brand. They follow the rules of narrative: setup, tension, revelation. The brand appears in service of the story, not the other way around.

The campaigns in this collection

  1. Conversations with Woody Allen - Knopf · Chip Kidd™ · 2010

Cover for Eric Lax's Conversations with Woody Allen. The pensive portrait wreathed in snippets of talk mirrors the book's form - decades of candid interviews about film, laid out like a scattered chat.

  2. The Wave - Yas Island · NABAROSKI AD STORE of Tailoring Ideas, Shaping Stories .

Ad for The Wave Residence on Yas Island. Turning the woman's dress into rolling waves sells the seaside-luxury fantasy - buyers invited to literally wear the ocean and "sail into joy."

  3. El Conejo que Soñó en Grande - Chery · Norlop VML, Quito, Ecuador

A tribute to Benito, an artist who became shorthand for Latin self-belief and for daring to want something oversized. Chery frames each step and each detour as the labour behind a dream that looked impossible, celebrating the process of believing and continuing rather than the arrival.

  4. Reading Fulfills

Children are drawn to games and tablets rather than books, and childhood is a period of rebellion parents eventually stop fighting. The campaign redirects that instinct instead of resisting it, daring children to rebel by reading, with each poster built as a spoof of a literary classic.

  5. Your Ticket into New Worlds

Social platforms already own Gen Z attention, and the appeal is being inside a shared conversation. Reading is positioned to compete on exactly that ground: not as schoolwork but as entire worlds to enter and then talk about, with the book framed as the ticket in.

  6. The Incomplete History - Jeep Ecuador · Norlop VML, Quito, Ecuador · 2026

Paintings of revolutions, liberations and independence movements have something in common: women are almost absent, making up roughly one percent of the figures depicted, which is nothing like the historical reality. Jeep Ecuador uses that gap to extend its There's Only One idea, pointing out that t

  7. The Napkin That Changed Everything - Mini Cooper · Goodby Silverstein & Partners San Francisco

In 1956 Alec Issigonis sketched the first MINI on a restaurant napkin: wheels pushed into the corners, engine turned sideways, small outside and roomy inside. That drawing rearranged the industry and led to the 1959 Cooper and the Monte Carlo Rally wins. The campaign returns to the napkin as the ori

  8. Aftermath - Google

School maths has changed and parents cannot help with homework using the methods they were taught. Google Gemini is positioned as the translator between the two: a tool that takes the maths a parent already knows and converts it into the new method their child is being taught, aimed at the frustrati

  9. VIVE MÁS, GRABA MENOS - SUPER RICAS · DENICOLÁS

Going to a concert used to mean singing until your voice went. Now the room is a wall of raised phones and far fewer people actually present. With hundreds of shows arriving in the country, Super Ricas makes the case for putting the screen down: live more, record less.

  10. Roads Remembered - Subaru · 2020

Subaru "Roads Remembered". Subaru frames nostalgic road-trip memories and the journeys that stay with us.

  11. Announcement - Royal Kingdom · 2023

Royal Kingdom "Announcement". A reveal spot announcing a major project or destination.

  12. Fixing Your Finances, Unleashing New Shenanigans - Trevi · 2025

Trevi "Fixing Your Finances, Unleashing New Shenanigans". A playful finance spot pairing sorting your money with fresh fun.

  13. A Source of Pride on World Arabic Language Day - KSAA · 2024

Created for the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language (KSAA) on World Arabic Language Day, "A Source of Pride" (نفخر بها) addresses the growing preference for foreign languages among Arab youth, which threatens to relegate native Arabic to formal or historical contexts. The campaign rests o

  14. Stories - Mini · Jung von Matt · 2016

MINI needed to pivot away from spec-driven automotive advertising to reposition the brand within modern urban culture. The campaign rests on the idea that a car is defined by the personal journeys and creative lives of its drivers rather than its technical features. Jung von Matt replaced traditiona

  15. Lloret McKenna Dunn - BAFTA · 2020

A BAFTA film: a lone hooded figure before a vast loch and mountains evokes the solitary vision of the filmmaker - celebrating the artistry and talent BAFTA honours.

  16. Pay It On Your Own - MTN · 2020

MTN "Pay It On Your Own". MTN frames financial independence through its mobile pay service.

  17. Poäng - Friendship - IKEA · 2016

IKEA marks 40 years of the Poäng chair by asking how it came to exist at all. The insight: a design classic earns its status through its origin story, not its longevity alone, so the film goes back to the making of the chair rather than restating that it has lasted.

  18. Rooted in Heritage, Driven by Dreams - Sovereign Bank

Sovereign Bank is the largest tribally owned bank in the United States, and the campaign makes that its whole argument rather than a footnote. It ties the institution's Citizen Potawatomi Nation roots to how it serves customers now, framing financial stability as something built for the generations

  19. Knights - Latvian Lotto

Latvian Lotto "Knights". A lottery spot using a knights conceit to dramatise playing and winning.

  20. Insuring Ambition - Domuts

"Insuring Ambition" for Domuts: a sprinkled donut crackling with lightning turns an everyday treat into a jolt of energy and drive - ambition served up with playful pop.

  21. BIC - NOSOTROS

NOSOTROS "BIC". A BIC spot celebrating simple, dependable everyday products.

  22. Nonna Evergreen - Shopify · 2022

Shopify "Nonna Evergreen". Shopify frames a small, family-run business thriving online.

  23. It's Better with Spark - Spark

A playful New Zealand lifestyle spot for Spark that sells connectivity through small, joyful "just do it" moments - find the goat, eat the dumplings, dance like nobody's recording. Life, not technology, is the hero; the network is the quiet enabler that makes everyday spontaneity better.

  24. 175 Years - NBG · 2016

NBG "175 Years". An anniversary spot marking 175 years of the National Bank of Greece.

Why this collection is worth studying

Advertising that tells a story rather than making a claim takes a creative risk: if the story doesn't work, nothing else can compensate. But when storytelling advertising works, it achieves something no product claim can: it makes the audience feel something they didn't expect to feel, and they associate that feeling with the brand. That unexpected emotional reward is the most powerful thing advertising can do.
