Luxury Advertising

Luxury advertising plays by different rules. Where most advertising tries to make its audience feel something positive about a product, luxury advertising tries to make its audience feel something positive about themselves - specifically, the version of themselves they'd like to be. The best luxury campaigns - Chanel's films with Karl Lagerfeld, the Louis Vuitton Core Values series, Rolex's sustained investment in precision and achievement - understand that the product is secondary to the world it inhabits. In luxury, the advertising is the product.

Why this collection is worth studying

What luxury advertising teaches is the power of restraint and mystique. The campaigns that have maintained the highest brand premium over time are the ones that say least about what the product is or does. They show, instead, who you become when you own it. That restraint is difficult to execute and easy to undervalue - but it's the foundation of why some brands can charge a thousand times their competitors' prices for objectively comparable products.
