Nostalgia in Advertising

Nostalgia is one of advertising's most powerful levers and one of its most easily misused. Used well - as in Coca-Cola's New Coke reversal, McDonald's retro packaging campaigns, or the Nintendo Classic Mini launch - it creates an emotional warmth that no other creative approach can replicate. Used carelessly, it produces advertising that feels cynical and calculated, borrowing feeling it hasn't earned. The campaigns in this collection found something genuinely worth remembering and built from there.

The campaigns in this collection

  1. The Best Adventures Start at Home

The creative idea taps into the imaginative world of childhood play, where mundane household objects transform into grand settings for adventure. By framing a soft, rippled blue bed blanket as a turbulent ocean for a tiny toy pirate ship, the campaign uses visual metaphor to show how home is the lau

  2. Cahokia Jazz - Faber · Henry Petrides · 2025

Cover for Francis Spufford's Cahokia Jazz. The jazz-age deco skyline conjures the novel's alternate-history 1920s American city - a noir mystery set in a world that never was.

  3. You, Bleeding Childhood - & Other Stories · Holly Ovenden · 2024

Cover for Michele Mari's You, Bleeding Childhood. The overload of toys and childhood icons, edged with menace (the skull flag), captures stories where nostalgia curdles into obsession and dread.

  4. The Buddha of Suburbia - Faber · Kishan Rajani · 2025

Cover for Hanif Kureishi's The Buddha of Suburbia. The cheeky hearts and suburban cyclist against a rising sun catch the novel's warm, satirical coming-of-age energy in 1970s London.

  5. Manhood for Amateurs - Harper · Will Staehle · 2009

Cover for Michael Chabon's essays Manhood for Amateurs. The old-fashioned gauge measuring the moods of being a man frames the book as an amateur's readout on husband-, father- and sonhood.

  6. New Liberal Arts - Revelator Press · Brandon S. Kelley · 2009

Cover for New Liberal Arts. Dressing a forward-looking book in the sober red-cloth livery of an old textbook is a quiet joke - reinventing the curriculum while nodding to the tradition it updates.

  7. I Love It When You Talk Retro - Jason Ramirez · 2010

Cover for Ralph Keyes's book on the forgotten origins of American slang. The retro comic panel and speech bubble literally put old-fashioned talk in someone's mouth - form matching a playful history of language.

  8. A Short History of the United States - Harper Perennial · Adam Johnson · 2010

Cover for Robert Remini's A Short History of the United States. The idyllic 19th-century American landscape sets a sweeping, foundational tone for a compact survey of the nation's whole story.

  9. The Sunset Limited - Chip Kidd™ · 2009

Cover for Cormac McCarthy's The Sunset Limited. Presenting it in the standard yellow playscript livery honours the work's form - a two-hander written as drama, dressed exactly like the acting editions it belongs beside.

  10. Digital Folklore - 826DC · Olia Lialina · 2010

Cover for Lialina and Espenschied's Digital Folklore. The unicorn GIFs and glitter-sky aesthetic celebrate the amateur vernacular of the early web - exactly the folk culture the book preserves.

  11. Good Faith - Anchor · Gabriele Wilson · 2009

Cover for Jane Smiley's Good Faith. A hearty handshake, that classic emblem of a trustworthy deal, sets up a novel about 1980s real-estate greed where good faith is exactly what gets betrayed.

  12. The White Guy - Peter Cocking · 2009

Cover for Stephen Hunt's satirical The White Guy: A Field Guide. Presenting a generic suited everyman like a specimen in a nature guide sets up the book's tongue-in-cheek anthropology of a type.

  13. LaserWriter II - Farrar,Straus and Giroux · Tamara Shopsin · 2021

Cover for Tamara Shopsin's LaserWriter II. Building the whole design from printer test-page marks perfectly suits a novel set in a 90s Mac repair shop - the machine printing its own book cover.

  14. A Midsummer Night’s Dream - Manuja Waldia · 2015

Pelican Shakespeare edition of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The tangled quartet of lovers and Puck's love-in-idleness magic are distilled into one symmetrical icon; the crossed arrows and shared heart map the play's mismatched, redirected desire.

  15. The Incomplete History - Jeep Ecuador · Norlop VML, Quito, Ecuador · 2026

Paintings of revolutions, liberations and independence movements have something in common: women are almost absent, making up roughly one percent of the figures depicted, which is nothing like the historical reality. Jeep Ecuador uses that gap to extend its There's Only One idea, pointing out that t

  16. The Napkin That Changed Everything - Mini Cooper · Goodby Silverstein & Partners San Francisco

In 1956 Alec Issigonis sketched the first MINI on a restaurant napkin: wheels pushed into the corners, engine turned sideways, small outside and roomy inside. That drawing rearranged the industry and led to the 1959 Cooper and the Monte Carlo Rally wins. The campaign returns to the napkin as the ori

  17. First BBQ - Bar-S

Bar-S parked carts outside courthouses on the days of naturalisation ceremonies, so new citizens walked out into a warm hot dog and an invitation to their first barbecue. The gesture rests on a simple line: it makes no difference whether you have been American for twenty seconds or twenty years.

  18. TENEMOS ALGO DE MAMÁ - Netlife · BBA Ecuador

Netlife had built its position as the leading internet provider on innovation and technology, playing the magician and the sage. Looking closer, it found its real role in people's lives sat somewhere warmer and more domestic, and the campaign moves the brand onto that ground.

  19. Crecer es tener juguetes nuevos - Marcimex · BBA · 2026

Children's Day is normally saturated with toys, sweets and theme parks aimed at children. The appliance chain Marcimex aimed at the adults instead, drawing visual parallels between a child's toys and the grown-up equivalents that replace them, shot with warm domestic lighting so growing up is framed

  20. Giants Make Us Tall - NBA · 2025

NBA "Giants Make Us Tall". An NBA spot celebrating how its stars lift and inspire fans.

  21. Roads Remembered - Subaru · 2020

Subaru "Roads Remembered". Subaru frames nostalgic road-trip memories and the journeys that stay with us.

  22. Rewrite The Show - HDA

HDA "Rewrite The Show". A spot framing the brand around reinvention and rewriting the rules.

  23. Outside - NHL · FCB · 2012

NHL "Outside". An NHL spot celebrating outdoor hockey and the game's grassroots.

  24. Baci Perugina - Baci Perugina · YAM112003 · 2016

A film for Baci Perugina: hands unwrapping the blue-foiled chocolate foreground the "baci" (kisses) and the love note inside - romance and affection shared in a single sweet.

Why this collection is worth studying

What distinguishes great nostalgia advertising from lazy nostalgia advertising is specificity. Vague references to 'simpler times' are not nostalgic - they're sentimental. Real nostalgia names the thing precisely: this song, this logo, this packaging, this moment. The more specific the memory, paradoxically, the more universally it resonates. That precision is the engine of the campaigns in this collection.
