Outdoor Advertising

Outdoor advertising is the most democratic medium there is - it interrupts everyone, regardless of whether they've opted in. Which means the bar for what earns attention is uniquely high. The best outdoor work communicates instantly: one image, a handful of words, an idea so clearly expressed that it lands before you've finished looking. This collection brings together the campaigns that cleared that bar - from the Economist's wit-driven poster series to location-specific interventions that made the context part of the concept.

The campaigns in this collection

  1. Can I get uhhhhh - McDonald's · 2022

The creative taps into the universal, highly relatable human truth of pulling up to a fast-food drive-thru speaker and pausing indecisively with 'Can I get uhhhhh...' Tapping into this ubiquitous cultural moment, the brand uses environmental design to turn a mundane parking lot into a humorous, self

  2. Recycle Me

A poster on the theme of recycling. A single crumpled scrap drawn with care asks the viewer to see waste as something worth another life - a small object given dignity on a bold field.

  3. Top Dog Underdog - Pentagram · 2009

Pentagram poster for Suzan-Lori Parks's Topdog/Underdog. One dog mirrored into its own upside-down twin captures the play's two brothers - locked rivals who are reflections of each other, top and under.

  4. Odd Couple - Falk Schwalbe · 2025

Poster for an "Odd Couple" music event. Two colliding ovals tied together by one blue line literalise the title - a mismatched pair held in the same loop.

  5. Formvorlagen - Falk Schwalbe · 2026

Poster for "Formvorlagen," a silkscreen-print exhibition by Falk Schwalbe. The overprinted modular type is itself a demonstration of screenprint form and layering - the medium advertising the medium.

  6. In The Name of Living - Sajad Amini · 2026

Poster for "In the Name of Living," an evening of Iranian music and conversation in solidarity with the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. The broken bilingual type embodies a culture asserting itself under pressure.

  7. International Jester Festival in Willisau - niklaus troxler for 100 beste Plakate · 2025

Niklaus Troxler poster for the International Jester Festival in Willisau. The swarming, colour-drunk mob of masks captures Fasnacht carnival mayhem - anarchic fun rendered as a wall of grinning faces.

  8. Liberty - Ovidiu Hrin · 2021

Poster for a documentary film festival themed on liberty. Turning "freedom" into police-cordon tape that fences everything off makes the paradox visceral - the word for liberty used to restrict.

  9. Swiss Overshoot Day 2025 - Finn Stillhart, Jakob Galler, Lorena Gamper for 100 beste Plakate · 2025

Greenpeace poster marking Swiss Overshoot Day. Framing overconsumption as a shopping receipt the planet has to pay makes the ecological debt tangible - "thank you for your purchase, nature pays the price."

  10. Visible - Noel Grüter for 100 beste Plakate · 2025

Poster for a Lucerne art school's graduation showcase. Objects half-hidden under plastic sheeting tease work about to be unwrapped and revealed - fitting for a show titled around becoming "visible."

  11. 44e AMR Jazz Festival - Atelier BLVDR for 100 beste Plakate · 2025

The improvisational spirit of jazz rendered as spontaneous gesture: hand-made brush marks stand in for a live solo while the typographic grid keeps time. Poster for the 44th AMR Jazz Festival in Geneva.

  12. Die Arbeit - Falk Schwalbe · 2022

Poster titled "Die Arbeit" (The Work). The relentless marching rows of triangular type turn labour into visual rhythm - repetition and industrial riso texture standing in for toil itself.

  13. Bilingual Typography CAA Conference NYC - Sajad Amini · 2025

Identity for a bilingual-typography session at the CAA conference. The letterforms pulling apart and re-mapping dramatise the real tension of designing across Latin and Perso-Arabic scripts - type as a system under negotiation.

  14. Freedom for Iran - Sajad Amini · 2026

A protest poster for "Freedom for Iran." Shattered bilingual type caught between labelled West and East visualises a nation torn between forces since 1979 - typography as fracture and dissent.

  15. Fackelmann - Ovidiu Hrin · 2023

Poster for a Romanian production "Fackelmann." The towering upward-thrusting concrete spire and the "Portret Vertical" tag frame the piece around ascent, scale and rigid verticality.

  16. Donna con Donna - Ovidiu Hrin · 2023

Poster for "Donna con Donna." The raw, oversized brushstroke amid handwriting turns the piece into a spontaneous gesture of intimacy and voice - emotion rendered as ink, not layout.

  17. Haus für Poesie — Programme Campaign September/October 2025 - (Studio) Daniel Zenker for 100 beste Plakate · 2025

Programme poster for Berlin's Haus fur Poesie. It trusts a single evocative line of verse to carry the whole design - poetry itself as the visual - foregrounding language over imagery.

  18. BEYOND - Massimiliano Audretsch for 100 beste Plakate · 2025

A bilingual Arabic-English invitation whose couplet and single folded form evoke a threshold - a meeting place "beyond" the horizon where sun sets and moon rises. Language pairing makes the idea of crossing over literal.

  19. Iran Massacre 2026 - Sajad Amini · 2026

A memorial protest poster about state killings in Iran. Testimony reduced to shattered fragments of a parent's words makes the violence feel raw and unassimilable - type broken like the lives it names.

  20. Constructing Posters - Dafi Kühne · 2026

Poster by Dafi Kuhne for his "Constructing Posters" show at Tokyo's ggg gallery. It literally demonstrates its title - the raw letterpress components strewn mid-build - celebrating hand-made poster craft as process, not just product.

  21. OPUS, Design Exhibition - Sajad Amini, Izzy Lima, Magda Wilhelm, Skyler Baker · 2024

Poster for the OPUS design exhibition. The interlocking letters packed into one solid mass turn the type itself into the "work" on show - a design object advertising a design show.

  22. The Neverending Story - neue gestaltung for 100 beste Plakate · 2025

Poster for a stage version of Michael Ende's The Neverending Story. A cloud shaped like the luckdragon Falkor conjures the book's boundless world of imagination - a sky you could fly into.

  23. CONFOEDERATIO - FLAG Aubry/Broquard for 100 beste Plakate · 2025

A poster riffing on Swiss identity (Confoederatio Helvetica) through deliberately childlike, hand-drawn faces - the nation rendered as a warm, imperfect crowd of individuals rather than a formal emblem.

  24. Titus Andronicus - Ovidiu Hrin · 2012

Poster for a staging of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus. The bloody hand silencing the mouth evokes the play's mutilations and enforced silence - brutality and censorship in one image.

Why this collection is worth studying

Working in outdoor forces a kind of creative discipline that no other medium demands. You can't explain your idea - you have to express it. You can't provide context - you have to assume none. You can't reward patience - you have to deliver immediately. Every creative should spend time with great outdoor work, because the thinking skills it develops are transferable to everything else.
